The Kerry Way – recap and lessons learned

We’ve made it, we have finished the Kerry Way.
Below you’ll find a estimated summary of our long-time-hike.
Stages: 9
Stages walked: 8
Kilometers walked: 137,5
Average kilometers walked per day: 17,2
Hours a day walked with our approx. 20kg backpacks: 6-9
Kilometers walked with backpacks: 119,9
Altitude difference overcome in meters:4454
Kilometers tramped: 17
Kilometers by carriage: 5
Kilometers by bus(complete 8th stage): 35
Blisters walked: 0
Tendons overextendend/overworked: Jessy =1; Björn =0
And how was it?
It was extreme. Extremely beautiful, extremely strainious, extremely funny, extremely frustrating and extremely new.
Additionally we’ve learned extremely much:

1. The more baggage you have, the slower and more hurtful you are.

Sounds trivial, but must say we have underestimated our 20kg backpacks.
Especially in the mountains we we’re pretty slow. In the evenings the feet hurt a lot.
We noticed it the most at our last stage, where we sent our backpacks to the last city. We walked double as fast and the way was only half as exhausting.
Next time we will think two times about what to pack.

2. The right equipment is everything.

One time we walked 40kms in one day in sneakers and I don’t need to tell you that we came back with lots of blisters.
Through a really good consultation in an outdoor store in Marburg, we have found the right hiking-shoes and hiking-backpacks and we’ve had no blisters whatsoever.
Generally I don’t want to know, how our hike would’ve looked without the right equipment.

3. Pack enough water!

Stage 4 and 5 were shortened by us through wild camping in the middle. Of course we we’re sure we would come by a water source, since all other stages of the Kerry Way hat multiple of them and we had a good water filter with us.
So we didn’t overburden us with water. Unfortunately, the next morning started with a lot of hills and our water ran out. Of course there was no water source in sight.
I tell you, it’s not fun to walk such a strainious hike thirsty. Lucky for us, our part-time hiking companions from Germany gave us some of their also limited water supply and that at some point we found a house were we were able to fill up our bottles again.

4. The Irish people look grumpy, but are incredibly helpful and sincere.

5. Tramping in Irland is seemingly not as easy as it used to be.

The Irish are more alert because of the growing crime rate in Europe. Most of the long-time locals will still give you a ride though.

6. Ireland is unbelievable pretty and the Kerry Way is very diversified.

Every stage of the Kerry Way had completely different landscapes, as if you walked through a new country every day.
I wholeheartedly recommend the Kerry Way, so if you want to have a great hiking-vacation, this is the place to go.
Many greetings from us, we will enjoy our last couple of days in Dublin before we will return to Germany on saturday. 🙂

      Jessy
