What else was there to see? About booze, education and cliffs

We’ve had some time to recap our trip to Ireland now and I can almost walk normally again (more about that later 😉 )

For everyone who wants to visit Ireland, below a couple of activities we also tried.

We stayed in Dublin after our hike on the Kerry way. So what else is there to do besides visiting pubs and eating?

Cliffs of Moher

Some of you may have already heard of the Cliffs of Moher. At the southwest coast of Ireland, with 120m-214m in height, they are quite imposing cliffs. Needless to say, this is why they are so famous. We took a bus tour with wild rover tours, where they took us on a daytrip to the Cliffs, Atlantic Edge Walk and to the city of Galway

I can recommend all three and in Galway I can also recommend a good physiotherapist, who took care of my foot after I sprained my ankle at the cliffs of Moher.

Here a couple of impressions from the cliffs of Moher for you.

Teeling Distillerie

When thinking of Ireland, most people also think of irish Whiskey (at least we do). We first wanted to visit the Old Jameson Distillery, but have then decided for the Teeling Distillery, since they themselves are really distilling in Dublin. The tour was diverting and they told very interesting facts, although I won’t spoil you as a potential visitor. The slogan: the Spirit of Dublin can be found everywhere, since Teeling has reopened the first Distillery in 2015, after the last one closed in 1976. Due to many factors there hasn’t been any Distillery in the meantime. Because of that I think the Teeling Distillery is something special and worth a visit.

After the tour we had a very good tasting. Depending on which tasting you want you can spend either 15€, 20€ or 30€ (including the tour).

We of course have decided for the 30€ package and tried the following Whiskeys:

  • Teeling Small Batch
  • Teeling Single Malt
  • Teeling Revival vol III
  • Limited Edition Single Cask

My personal favorite was the Teeling Revival vol. III, since this is a very mild and fruity whiskey. Unfortunately the bottle is priced at 120€(when ordered in Germany), which also derives from the fact that there are only 10000 bottles which have been bottled for the reopening. Due to the alcohol taxes one should refrain from buying whiskey in Ireland, but rather buy them in Germany or at the airport.

Guinness Storehouse

The Guinness Storehouse is being hyped extremely in Dublin. And it was really very…. nice. Multiple stories and in the form of a glass of Guinness makes it very imposing.

Then you can find out what beer is made of, where Guinness gets its dark color from, how to drink a Guinness, which Marketing figures there have been throughout the years. And all of that can be seen with so unbelievably many other people, that one is at the brink of claustrophobia. Additionally you can draw a Guinness with guidance.

After the Guinness-draw-education you receive a nice certificate, which will look just great in your next job application.

On top you have a 360 degrees panoramic view, where you can enjoy your Guinness. Enjoying is relative though, since it felt like 500 people where also there, which caused one not to be able to go anywhere, least of all finding a spot at the Window to see the view. All in all I would say you can go there, but you don’t have to.

The Hideout

The only place in Dublin where the drinks weren’t so expensive, because The Hideout is a poolhall where you can BYOB. BYOB means “Bring Your Own Beer” and means: You pay 5 Euros to bring your own drinks and can keep them cool in one of the many refrigerators. The pool was pretty expensive, but through the saved money from the drinks it was still pretty affordable. I think we payed 24€ for 3 hours, but don’t pin me down to that. It was fun and something new, so I would really recommend it.

    Kuno
