Paradies – Isla Holbox

And now the Post you’ve all been waiting for! Or not, I don’t really know.

ISLA Holbox!

I’ve seen a lot of posts about it and seen many pictures and just couldn’t wait. From Valladolid we took a bus to Chiquila und then with a ferry to Holbox.

And my god, it was beautiful there. The houses were painted in all colors of the rainbow, there was street art everywhere.

There were almost no cars. If someone was motorized, it was either a motorcycle, a scooter, or our personal favorite, a golfcart. Even the taxis where golfcarts. Just crazy.

Our Hostel was a little outside of the city, but that only helped it’s charm. We were sleeping at Balam Eco Hostel in a huge tent. My prayers have again been answered:

(And Björn’s later on as well)

On Holbox there was no sense of time, no things you needed to do, I don’t think I was ever as relaxed as I was there. Usually we are bored easily, but not on Holbox. Strolling on the beach or walking in the city was all you need.

Did you ever walk 3 days only barefoot? Until Holbox, we neither. But it is common there and we found a nice sign in a restaurant: if you are wearing shoes, you are overdressed.

A few kilometers from our Hostel, there were sand platforms in the middle of the water, where you could walk through with the water only reaching your ankles.

At night, right near our hostel there was a nature phenomena: Bioluminescence. We were told the water is glowing there. After a walk to the place we were rather disappointed. The water didn’t glow. There was a glow in the distance, but that looked more like some city far away. We still walked a while and found loads of tourists, looking equally disappointed.

Well, we walked back then, and like some others walked through the water. And that did the trick! Every movement we made made the water around us glow. Additionally it looked like little fireflies were flying away from us. When a fish swam by, you could easily see it as they were glowing too.

Unfortunately there are no pictures of this, because my camera has it’s limits and it was just too dark. But you have to see it yourselves to believe it, so all good.

Everything has an End, and so after 3 awesome days in Holbox we needed to take the bus back to Cancun (flooding inclusive).

There we took our next flight off to Peru. Goodbye Holbox, We will miss you 🙁
